I can't help but wonder if Hell is freezing over. I mean, given all the Democrats' condemning of Bush's economic policies, only to have the best quarterly progress in nearly 20 years, and now this, from the NY Times. Apparently, even a usually left-wing columnist, William Safire, is supporting Bush in Iraq, calling on the dovish left-wingers to realize the importance of staying the fight in Iraq. While I'm surprised, I do applaud the call. As Mr. Safire mentioned, "We will help Iraqis win the final war against Baathist terror. Failure is not an option. "

I share your surprise. If Hell's not freezing over, then it's certainly a little cooler. I have a hard time believing that anyone seriously thinks we should pull out of Iraq. I've always thought that all the dovishness was just a political manuever from the Left to appear different from Dubya and to appease their fringe hippy weirdos. Still, if Safire thinks we should stay in Iraq, the Leftist base can't be too far from him - Looks pretty good for Dubya in the elections.
It would be asinine to leave, betray everyone there, and have to come back and kick out Saddam again when Bush III comes along :).
Here he is again, supporting Bush. Perhaps he's seen the light ;).
And here's another columnist taking the view, Nicholas Kristof. Wow.
